Illumination
2001, mural panel, oil, metallic powders, silica, automotive glass and mirror shards, 49" x 73".
Private Collection, Napa Valley, CA
This abstract work was originally created for “Flag: Interpreting an American Icon”, an exhibit at the Napa Valley Museum mounted in 2002 in response to 9/11. The painting was exhibited as a floor piece with surrounding stanchions — so that the viewer looked down upon a vision of the night sky.
The rich blue field with stars is a prayer for communication and compassion, and a thick pour of flag red is covered with many layers of peaceful blues, with castings of silver and gold powders throughout, shards of mirror, and glass from automotive wrecks.
In 2006, Illumination was acquired from the artist by the owners of La Casa del Cielo Azul, and became the visual center in the living room of this spectacular contemporary house designed by architect Juancarlos Fernandez, with Interior design by Leslie Wilks.
